I’ve been spending a lot of time at home lately. A lot.
And I’ve noticed something: when I’m spending most of my day in jeans or yoga pants (JK. I’m in my PJs as I write this.) I notice how uncomfortable all my underwear really is.
It wedgies me as I sit on the couch.
It digs into my butt when I stride it out on my daily block walk.
The waistband rolls down to settle itself under my (I’d like to say minimal) tummy pooch.
It’s not cool.
Thankfully, we are finally in a financial position where I can upgrade my underwear arsenal without sacrificing my wine budget. So after checking out some pretty rave Tommy John underwear reviews, I figured I’d give them a shot. But OMG—that price.
Could they really be that good?
I took one for the team and ordered a few pairs to find out.
I should specify that I’m testing the women’s range, although I hear the men’s Tommy John boxer brief and trunk range is ridiculously good. Once I’ve exorcised all hubby’s hole-y boxer briefs I’ll get on that.
My Tommy John Underwear Review
Ok, let me just go on the record with something: the Tommy John underwear range is impressive. There are five lines for women—Cool Cotton, Air, Second Skin, Air Invisible, and Comfort Smoothing.
There’s also a veritable rainbow of colors and styles to suit even the most consumeristic hearts among us. Check out this post if you want to learn about all the different underwear styles out there.
I ordered five pairs in the end, because overwhelming options. Here’s my opinion.
Tommy John Cool Cotton Review
My first impression of Cool Cotton underwear is that it’s soft. Apparently that’s because it uses a Pima Cotton / Spandex fabric blend.
It’s cooler, faster drying, and more breathable than standard cotton.
What I loved:
- The Cool Cotton line is pretty minimalist in design, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck for choice. The range has everything from a standard brief—that’s the one I’ve been rocking—to a high-cut cheeky brief, a thong, a boy short, and bike shorts—a la Kim K.
- Tommy John also delivers on the color selection front, too. The line covers all the nudes and neutrals, as well as a cute burgundy number for my classy compadres.
- No rolling waistband, ladies! The Cool Cotton briefs also didn’t bunch up around my butt, pinch, or wedgie me.
- True to size fit (that goes for everything from the Tommy John brand so far)
Best for:
Everyday wear, and lounging around the house. The Cool Cotton range is designed for comfort—although I could imagine that the black thong could take you from chilling at home to boudoir adventures pretty easily.
If you’re ready to unleash your inner seductress, Tommy John also has a Cool Cotton lace waist line for a little bit more va-va-voom.
Tommy John Second Skin Review
Tommy John’s Second Skin line is all about “barely there” feel and comfort. And they deliver on both counts.
The range includes two styles of bike short-style underwear, boy shorts, thongs, high-waisted briefs, standard briefs, and cheeky briefs, in a selection of neutrals, bold solids, and a print—but more on that in a second.
What I loved:
- Super-cute pink and white Gingham print, bold raspberry color, and all the neutrals you need for your underwear wardrobe
- I’ve been trialling Tommy John underwear for 3 months now, and these bad gals don’t pill, pile, fuzz, or pucker. Apparently that’s because of the 90% Micro Modal fabric.
- Super-soft and comfortable
- No wedgies, no roll-down at the waist, and no chafing my butt cheeks
Best for:
These are a no-fuss, ultra-slinky range of underwear for superior comfort around the house.
I sprang for the micro rib as well as the standard Second Skin cheeky brief, because I love the texture, but Tommy John also does a lace waist version if you’re looking for something a little fancier.
Tommy John Air Review
For me, Air—and the Air Invisibles spin-off line—are the best-in-show from Tommy John. These underwear make me feel like I’m wearing nothing at all without the weirdness of commando living.
You can pack a bunch of them into your suitcase if you’re lucky enough to go travelling right now, and as an added bonus: they’re anti-microbial!
What I loved:
- Extremely light and quick drying Air Mesh fabric
- Guaranteed No Visible Panty Line
- 17 colors to choose from—including a solid range of nude shades that actually look nude
- From high-waist to thong to slip short to high-waisted thong, Tommy John’s Air and Air Invisibles range literally have everyone covered.
Best for:
Working out, hanging out, and looking cute. FWIW, I got the Air high-waisted brief, and the Air Invisibles high-waisted thong. Equally fantastic and so comfortable.
Special Mention
Tommy John also has a Comfort Smoothing range of high-waisted underwear and slip shorts to contour and smooth out the ol’ lumps and bumps. I didn’t try it, but according to some avid fans, the range is crazy good.
The Big But...
Do you see what I did there?
Sadly, with all the pro points I’ve been raving about here, there had to be a but in there somewhere.
And there is: the price point.
Tommy John underwear sit at a much higher price bracket than your standard underwear choices. But if you're tired of your standard underwear choices literally creeping into your butt crack, maybe it’s time to try something new.
Is Tommy John Underwear Worth it?
Tommy John Review Summary
Tommy John underwear may sit at a premium price point—but they deserve to be there. If you can justify the luxury price-tag, there’s probably nothing to hold you back from buying into this underwear line. There’s enough in the range to cater to every taste, while maintaining a classic, smooth silhouette and just being downright comfortable.
