Negative Underwear Review: Am I Naked?

The other night I climbed into bed beside my hubby in a tee and underwear—as I have done ever since I gave up the cutesy lingerie game (much to his disappointment and my enthusiastic celebrations).

I was reading a book and suddenly had a weird feeling I had forgotten my underwear entirely. I not-so-subtly shoved my hand under the blankets to check.

And yes, I was wearing underwear.

Negative underwear, to be precise.

It’s not the first time this has happened since I started test-driving this brand. Me and the kid went on a school adventure a while back and—as it was the only thing close to adult excitement I’d had since his birth—I wore a dress.

As he frolicked joyfully in a sandpit with his friends, I had the sinking feeling I wasn’t wearing underwear under my dress.

Again, yes, I was wearing underwear. Again, Negative underwear.

So given that I have now officially been wearing these for six months—and ewww, you know what I mean—I figured I better get onto reviewing my findings.

The Negative Underwear Brand

Negative got its name from co-founders Marissa and Lauren deciding to operate in the negative space. That means no lace, no padding, no bows.

What they did do, however, is double down on premium fabrics and silky strapping to maximize the minimalistic underwear experience.

And it worked. New York magazine voted Negative the Best Comfortable Lingerie. They’ve also been featured in Vogue. So yeah, they were probably going to be pretty good.

I expected good, but being that underwear isn’t a one-size-fits-all kinda thing, I also knew not everything would be a hit.

I went into my Negative Underwear experience with a positive mind-set—and I dragged my sister (who is around 30 lbs and 2 children lighter than me) along for the ride.

Negative Underwear For The Petite Girls

Negative Silky Thong

From the outset, the Negative silky thong is cute. Super cute.

As with everything else in the Negative line, it has a minimalist style and a beautiful, sheer feel. My sister ordered the silky thong in Peach (a blush nude shade), but it’s also available in Slate, Buff, Black, and Slate Moiré.

The buttery smooth, ultra-thin fabric is a Polyamide Elastane blend (so… Nylon and Spandex, basically) with a cotton gusset.

My sister loved the ultra-low rise (the part I actually wasn’t keen on) and the barely there, uber-silkiness of the thong.

Negative Silky Thong Pros & Cons

Here are my overall thoughts on the Negative Silky Thong

Pros

  • Ultra-breathable cotton gusset
  • A super-silky feel
  • Lightweight
  • No visible panty line
  • Extremely low-rise for discretion
  • Pretty detailing
  • Premium 75% Polyamide / 25% Elastane fabric

Cons

  • Must be washed on the Delicates cycle and laid flat to air dry.

Negative Whipped Boy Short

I actually wished I’d ordered this one to test for myself. Straight out of the packaging it was probably the softest underwear I’ve ever felt.

Since I purchased another style from the Negative Whipped line I wasn’t too jealous, but seriously: this is the softest fabric in any underwear drawer. (It’s 91% Micro Modal / 9% Lycra, if you’re wondering.)

The Whipped boy short comes in Black / Buff, Black, White, and Buff. It has a cute low rise, on-trend diagonal seaming, and it shows just the right amount of butt cheek without feeling like it’s about to wedgie you.

Negative Underwear For The Curvy Girls

Negative Silky Brief

The Negative Silky brief has the same buttery, cosy feel as the rest of the Silky line, but slightly more coverage for us curvier ladies.

What I’m saying is: no roll-down! Just melt-on-the-skin goodness and a comfortable mid-rise, cheeky cut.

I ordered the Essaouira X Black color, which is essentially a black brief with sexy dappled cut-outs on each hip. It’s hot. If you wanted something a little more simple, Negative has your back: the Silky brief is available in Peach, Slate, Buff, and Black.

Negative Silky Brief Pros & Cons

My overall thoughts on the Negative Silky Brief

Pros

  • Ultra-breathable cotton gusset
  • Silken feel
  • No visible panty line
  • Mid-rise, ultra stretchy
  • The Essaouira X Black style lends a little drama with laser-cut hip detailing

  • Premium Belgian 75% Polyamide / 25% Elastane fabric

Cons

  • Thanks to the mid-cut back, they may be too cheeky for working out comfortably

Negative Cotton Thong

I honestly never thought I’d be trying out a thong at my age. I hated them with a passion once I was out of my college years. But here I am.

And the Negative cotton thong is a sexy mama jama. It has a mid-rise waist and high-cut legs for a really appealing, leg-lengthening shape (think 90s Heather Locklear in a swimsuit).

The 79% cotton, 21% Elastane blend is firm but flexible, ultra-breathable, and delightfully stretchy without losing its shape.

One possible flaw? It only comes in black or white.

Negative Underwear For The Mamas

Negative Whipped High Rise

To be fair, I am loathe to pigeon-hole my fellow mamas when it comes to underwear. Moms wear thongs too, after all.

But since I got into the baby-making game, I’ve loved me some full coverage underwear. High-waisted goodness is my jam because it holds in the last few—lolz—baby pounds and keeps me looking lifted and snatched.

So if you, like me, enjoy a high waist and a covered butt—this one’s for you.

The Whipped High Rise is softer than a rose petal. For real, it’s glorious. The Buff/White color also has beautiful rose gold faux fly grommets and full butt coverage.

And according to my husband, they look “way hotter than I imagined.” Glowing reference, coming from him.

Negative Whipped High Rise Pros & Cons

Here are my thoughts on the Negative Whipped High Rise underwear

Pros

  • Incredibly flattering on curvier shapes
  • Buff, Black, Buff / Black, Buff / White, White colorways
  • Delicate faux fly grommets in complimentary hardware shades
  • Crazy-soft—thanks to 91% Micro-Modal and 9% Lycra
  • Subtle, flattering vertical stripe effect
  • 100% cotton gusset

Cons

  • They won’t last if you throw them in the wash with your cottons or towels. Wash on Delicate cycle and dry flat in the shade.

Negative Cotton High Waist Brief

Another high-waisted offering from Negative, this is a super-soft long staple cotton / Elastane blend for breathability and stretch. The fabric is so fine it is almost sheer.

Ultra-comfortable for workouts and walks around the block, this is a great, simple solution for everyday underwear that still looks cute.

The only downside? The cotton high-waist brief is only available in black and white.

The Brief on Negative Underwear

I love Negative underwear because of their lightweight breathability, simple beauty, and total wearability.

The fact that they cater for all our shapes from petite to curvy and everyone in between just makes it that much more convincing that Negative is where I want to be.

Of course, laundering Negative underwear is a hassle—you can’t just throw them in with your jeans like some of us (side-eyes self) do. But the small amount of time spent on laundry is a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

If you want to feel naked without being naked (and without stripping your wallet naked) these are the closest underwear to that feeling. Trust me, they’ve tricked me before.

Just want to know what rocked our world? The Whipped High Rise and Silky Thong are our overall winners.
