We’ve all done it. We’ve all let our underwear drawer go to absolute crap. So badly, that finding a pair, or at least a pair that goes with the outfit you want to wear, takes a lot of time and effort. You have to basically take everything out of the drawer to find that one pair that you’re looking for.
We all know if our underwear drawer was neat and organized to begin with, that getting ready wouldn’t take an extra 10 minutes. Okay, so we know what we have to do. Let’s break down how to get your underwear drawer organized so you can take a few stressful minutes off of getting ready.
How to Organize Your Bra Drawer
Depending on your amount of space, and how many of each item you have, you might have a separate drawer for everything. Let’s start with your bras.
If you have an entire drawer for your bras, this is going to be super easy. You can lay them out flat, and then kind of waterfall stack them so you can see them all at once. It’ll be easier to find the one you want and you won’t have to untangle them or make a mess of taking one out.
If you have to share the drawer with underwear, fold the bras in half. You can still waterfall stack them to see all of the colors, but it’ll take up less space so that you can also fit your underwear.
If you want to make sure your bras won’t be going anywhere, you can add an organizer in your drawer. Yes, you can make your drawer look just like you were opening a drawer at Victoria’s Secret or Aerie.
Hit up IKEA or Target and find a cute cloth organizer. Make sure to measure your drawer first. There’s nothing worse than getting everything all ready to find out you don’t have the right size.
How to Organize The Underwear Drawer
This drawer is full of possibilities and options. This is where you need to organize it to your specific tastes and needs.
You can organize by color. Some people are more visual. My closet is still organized by color and sleeve length from my retail days, and I won’t ever change. You can set up your underwear solely by color. It might be easier for you to grab a pair to match your outfit that way.
You could organize by style. If you really don’t care about the color, then organizing by style might be best. If you are all about how the pair will fit under your jeans, leggings, or dress, then organize it by fit. Put your boy shorts in one neat pile. Your briefs in another.
If you are the kind of person who cannot wear a boy brief under jeans because the material is too thick and it feels uncomfortable, then organize by material. Put your silks in one pile, your thicker cotton in another.
It really is up to how you decided to pick a pair of underwear. I personally like to organize by what I would wear a pair with. I have one pile for lounge, one pile for my jeans, and so on.
I’m not picky about colors when it comes to underwear as I am with my tops. It’s more about the cut and how it fits under different bottoms for me.
How to Organize The Rest of Your Underwear
Let’s say you have bralettes, loungewear that doesn’t necessarily go under anything, or other odd bits and bobs. Those can be a separate section or a separate drawer if you have the space.
I don’t, so my bralettes and other cute little underwear shorts that I wouldn’t wear out of the house are in their own stacks in my underwear drawer. As well as any shapewear. Those can be in their own stack too.
If you don’t have the space and need multiple things to be in one drawer, you really need to get an organizer. They aren’t that expensive, and they will last a really long time because they are just sitting in the drawer.
It will also force you to put things back where they go. You won’t be able to toss anything anywhere, because the drawer probably won’t close with an organizer if you try to make a pile on top of it.
Clean Out Your Underwear Drawer
Also, since you are going to be taking everything out to clean up your drawer, let’s be real about the condition of your items.
For some reason we can never just toss out those old laundry day underwear. We like that they are broken in, that they cover everything, and that they have been with us through a lot.
Guys, throw them away and get a new pair. Please. It’s gross. There is nothing wrong with spending $20 to $30 bucks on yourself to get a few pairs of nice, new underwear.
Same with your bras. Your size and shape changes from year to year. Don’t hang on to that college bra. That’s why bralettes are so nice. You don’t have to worry about sizes that much since most are small, medium, or large.
I actually recently did this and I feel so much more adulty. It has been a struggle to keep everything organized by pile (because I don’t have an organizer and always want to throw the new stuff on top), but I’ve kept it up so far.
It’s easier to grab what you want, and the drawer stays neater overall. It was easier to toss out the old stuff too, once I realized what I actually had and how long it had been since I’d worn a certain pair.
Donate What You Can
If you have any bras or other appropriate items that can be donated, please check with your local shelter. Women’s and children’s shelters especially need items all of the time.
Happy organizing and enjoy your fresh and neat, ready-to-grab underwear drawer! Adulting can be rewarding sometimes.
