Do You Wear Underwear With Swimming Trunks?

You may be wondering why this question is even a "thing". It seems pretty simple, right?

Well, surprisingly, many people do ponder the question "should you wear underwear with swimming trunks?".

Thankfully, we have all the answers.

Let's dive into the swimming trunk versus underwear pool and figure out what you should be doing to keep your crown jewels safe and healthy.

Should You Wear Underwear With Swimming Trunks?

As a general rule, you don't have to wear boxers or briefs under your swimming trunks, briefs or shorts.

If you are in the camp of people who feel rather exposed when they hit the beach or pool in nothing but their trunks, let us assure you that you are more than covered up.

No, really, you are perfectly protected from those Peeping Tom's in the pool.

Thankfully, swimming trunks (and all other clothing pieces made for water use) have been designed to be underwear and outerwear; which, if you think about it, is really quite cool!

Okay, but, How on Earth am I Covered Up?

Swimming trunks are made from special materials that can deal with chlorine, dry quickly and soak up far less water.

They are specifically designed so you don't have to wear underwear. Unlike at your cousin's wedding, going commando is completely appropriate here — take this opportunity to feel thoroughly liberated!

We can almost guarantee that your swim trunks have some sort of lining or padding in the area that holds your precious parts in place.

If you're worried they don't, check for a small-meshed fabric in the crotch area (preferably at home, try not to flash the poor, unsuspecting public at your local pool!).

Although, try not to flip your lid if you don't see any lining. Since technology is continuously advancing, it is likely that newly bought swim trunks won't have any. We can feel you internally screaming as we contradict ourselves but please, let us explain.

Basically, the new materials tend to be a lot kinder to the groin, eliminating the need for a protective mesh. But, if you're worried, it's probably best to stick to the ones that do have the lining.

Pros of Wearing Underwear with Swimming Trunks

Extra Support

Those swim trunks you've been rocking for 5 years are probably a bit loose so, yes, wearing pants under them will support your cranberries better. Plus, the risk of them falling down is reduced.

But honestly? A better idea is to just buy a new pair of swimming trunks. All your junk in your trunk will thank you for it.

More Pushin' For Your Cushin'

Gents, we know you want that booty lifted and a great way to do this is to wear your boxers underneath your trunks.

Although, we wouldn't recommend doing this (yes, even though all heads will turn). Instead, purchase a better pair of trunks that lift your behind without an added layer.

Less Lining, More Problems (sometimes)

We said earlier that new materials have allowed designers to develop swim trunks that don't need lining or padding around the crotch.

However, you should wear boxers or briefs underneath those that don't have lining as you can experience more chafing — especially if the swim trunks aren't that well made.

Still, the best idea is to invest in a better pair!

Cons of Wearing Underwear with Swimming Trunks

Say "So Long" To Your Undies

Swimming truly damages your underwear.

Of course, one small dip won't hurt but prolonged use of undies beneath your swim trunks will cause the color to fade and the fibers to break down. You'll end up spending more time buying boxers than you will actually be swimming in them!

Bear in mind, we're not just talking about chlorine from public pools here — we mean the salt in the ocean too!

Snooping Swimmers Can See

Would you call yourself a "socks with sandals" kind of guy? No? Then why are you wearing underwear with your trunks dude? It's the same kind of thing.

As soon as your swimmers get wet, everybody and their dog are going to know that you're sporting undies with trunks. Not to mention that they'll slip down a bit since the cotton can't handle the weight of the water.

Poor Pool

Obviously, your cotton briefs aren't going to damage the ocean but they will harm the swimming pool.

The chemicals in public pools, especially chlorine, break the cotton fibers which then flow through the pool's filter. Eventually, this will cause the filter to stop working and going for a dip in your local pool will no longer be an option.

Times When You Must Wear Underwear with Swimming Trunks

While you shouldn't wear underwear (ever) with swim trunks, there is one exception. All rules have them, and this is no different!

Your Best Pal Chafing

Yup, swimming trunks can chafe sometimes. It's not comfortable and it causes ugly rashes in unnameable places. The material they're made from isn't designed to be super comfortable out of water.

So, the rule is: if you aren't getting in the water, but have to wear trunks (for some reason, we're not too sure), you can rock some undies. Just make sure they're anti-chafing underwear like these.

Tips for Wearing Underwear with Swimming Trunks

Our number one tip for wearing underwear with swimming trunks is: don't.

Pretty harsh, yes, we know. Seriously though, invest in a good pair of trunks that fit you well and you won't need to sport the underwear look.

Even the aforementioned chafing exception should be avoided altogether by wearing normal shorts while you're laying about in the sun. Just do a quick change before you take a dip and everything will be dandy!

Should You Wear Underwear Under Your Swim Trunks?

Do not wear underwear with swimming trunks. Buy a good pair of swim trunks with lining or padding in the nether regions.

Don't damage the community pool by wading around in your boxers. And, most importantly, THRIVE this summer in your newfound swimming trunk freedom!
